Legal Officer

Torres Strait Island Regional Council

  • Based at any TSIRC Division or Cairns Office
  • $68,692 - $70,304 per annum (pro-rata)
  • Fixed term (1 year), Part-time (3 days per week) with a possibility of extension
  • 6 weeks annual leave (FTE) with 17.5% leave loading + 12% superannuation
  • TSIRC gazetted holidays

About the role:

Reporting to the Manager Legal and Risk, the Legal Officer plays a pivotal role in providing accurate, ethical, strategic, and timely counsel and representation to TSIRC. The ultimate objective is to enable the efficient and compliant delivery of services within our jurisdiction.

Your responsibilities:

As a Legal Officer, you'll provide qualified legal advice on governance, compliance, contracts, and projects. Additionally, you'll lead the home-ownership project, manage expressions of interest, liaise with stakeholders, and present community information sessions. You'll also monitor and report on statutory developments, develop tailored legal solutions, and represent TSIRC's interests in consultations, negotiations, and mediations.

About you:

To excel in this role, you'll need a Bachelor of Laws (LLB) and at least two years of legal experience. You should possess an Unrestricted Employee Practicing Certificate issued by the Queensland Law Society and be admitted as a Solicitor on the Roll of Practitioners of both the Supreme Court of Queensland and the High Court of Australia. Experience in land law, property law, contract law, and governance, with a focus on local government contexts, is essential. A current (open and unrestricted) Queensland Driver's Licence and understanding of the issues impacting Torres Strait Islander people are also required.
