The Opportunity
Maribyrnong Council has an exciting opportunity for an experienced and passionate Disability Project Officer to join the Access & Inclusion Unit.
In this role, you will support the development, implementation and evaluation of Council's Disability Action Plan (DAP), helping to drive inclusive practices across the organisation and community. You will play a key role in embedding access and inclusion into Council's policies, planning and service delivery, while contributing to a more equitable and connected community.
Working collaboratively across Council and with community partners, you will influence decision-making, build organisational capability, and support initiatives that enhance the participation, access and wellbeing of people with disability.
Key Responsibilities
- Coordinate and support the development, implementation and continuous improvement of Council's Disability Action Plan (DAP)
- Provide specialist advice on disability access and inclusion to support informed and inclusive decision-making
- Support the integration of access and inclusion principles into policies, plans and service delivery
- Monitor, evaluate and analyse outcomes of DAP initiatives to inform continuous improvement
- Apply social justice principles and a community development approach to advance equitable access and participation
- Build the capability of staff through training, resources and practical guidance to support inclusive practice
- Develop strong relationships across Council to foster shared ownership of access and inclusion outcomes
- Engage with community networks, the Disability Advisory Committee and key sector partners to inform and co-design initiatives
- Prepare high-quality reports, briefings and documentation for internal and external stakeholders
About You
To be considered for this role, you will have the following:
- A tertiary qualification in disability, community development, social planning, public policy or a related discipline, with relevant experience.
- Demonstrated understanding of disability, including the social and systemic barriers experienced by people with disability.
- Applied knowledge of the social model of disability and the ability to translate this into practical outcomes.
- Experience working in access, diversity and inclusion, or delivering community-focused programs or initiatives.
- Understanding of relevant legislation and policy frameworks, including the Disability Act (Vic), NDIS and Disability Action Planning requirements
- Strong communication skills, with the ability to engage effectively with diverse stakeholders and prepare clear, concise reports.
- Experience supporting project delivery and governance, including advisory groups or committees.
- A collaborative and proactive approach, with the ability to influence and build relationships across a complex organisation.
