About the role

This role supports Council's disaster management framework by working closely with Community Disaster Management Groups to deliver prevention, preparedness, response, and recovery activities in line with the Disaster Management Act 2003 (QLD).

The position focuses on coordinating disaster management planning, supporting emergency preparedness and response, strengthening community resilience, and assisting with Council wide disaster management and climate resilience initiatives.

What you will be doing:

  • Working alongside Community Disaster Management Groups to support prevention, preparedness, response, and recovery activities.
  • Guiding and supporting groups to meet their responsibilities under the Disaster Management Act (QLD) 2003.
  • Keeping local disaster plans, procedures, and coordination arrangements up to date and practical.
  • Helping communities build resilience through better planning and preparedness.
  • Delivering education and awareness programs that equip communities to respond to disasters and adapt to climate related impacts.
  • Supporting climate resilience initiatives and helping communities prepare for future challenges.

What We're Looking For

We need someone who shares our values of One, Respect, Accountability, Courage, and Resilience. The ideal candidate will have:

  • Experience supporting disaster management policy, planning, and engagement across multiple communities.
  • Ability to provide practical support and high level advice to Disaster Coordinators, community members, and Local Disaster Management Groups.
  • Strong understanding of disaster coordination centre operations and meeting processes.
  • Experience working collaboratively with government, non-government agencies, and resilience or climate programs.
  • Skilled in stakeholder engagement, with excellent communication and relationship building abilities, including cultural awareness.
  • Confident using Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Outlook, Teams, PowerPoint).
  • Strong organisational skills with the ability to manage competing priorities and meet deadlines.
  • Knowledge of Torres Strait languages (Meriam Mir, Kala Lagaw Ya and/or Creole) highly regarded.

Other Requirements

  • Travel throughout the Torres Strait Islands and Cairns is a requirement of this position.
  • Due to the nature of this position, after-hours work may be required occasionally and especially during disaster-related events.

  • The preferred candidate may be required to apply for a National Police Certificate before appointment.
