About the role:

Council is seeking an experienced Environmental Engineer to lead the planning and delivery of solid waste management infrastructure and sustainability initiatives. This role is responsible for ensuring effective waste services, climate change adaptation, and environmental compliance, aligned with regional, state, and federal policy frameworks.

A day in the life of this role sounds a little like this…

  • Travel to and throughout the spectacular Torres Strait Islands.
  • Develop and implement waste management strategies, site-based plans, and landfill closure/post closure plans.
  • Analyse waste data to support operational planning, forecasting, costing, and fee structures.
  • Prepare and maintain waste management policies, asset management, and forecasting models.
  • Identify and secure external funding to support waste and sustainability initiatives.
  • Contribute to the development and review of Council's Climate Change Adaptation programs.
  • Support coastal hazard adaptation initiatives, including sea-level rise response.
  • Provide accurate environmental reporting for waste, water, and wastewater operations
  • Research and provide strategic advice on sustainability innovations and emerging technologies.

    What We're Looking For

    We need someone who shares our values of One, Respect, Accountability, Courage, and Resilience. The ideal candidate will have:

    • Tertiary qualification in Environmental Engineering, Environmental Management, or a related sustainability field, or equivalent relevant experience.
    • Demonstrated experience in waste management strategy, operations, and program delivery.
    • Proven ability in environmental sustainability initiatives, including climate change adaptation projects.
    • Strong data analysis and reporting skills related to environmental compliance.
    • Ability to strategically develop waste and sustainability projects aligned with regulatory frameworks.
    • Effective interpersonal and communication skills for stakeholder engagement and regulatory reporting.
    • Strong ability to conduct research on innovative environmental and sustainability practices.
    • Experience securing external funding and managing related project delivery.
