As an Environmental Health Technical Officer, no two days are the same. You'll be out in the community supporting the health and wellbeing of residents, while also building your technical skills in the field of environmental health. This is a three-day, office-based role worked on set days during the week, with the specific days to be agreed between you and Council. This provides structure while still allowing flexibility to support your learning and other commitments.

What a typical day will look like;

  • Visit local food businesses and aquatic facilities to carry out compliance checks and provide advice on safe practices.
  • Assist with wastewater and septic system assessments, helping to protect our natural environment.
  • Support investigations into public health matters such as nuisance complaints, pest control, or pollution issues.
  • Work alongside qualified Environmental Health Officers, gaining hands-on experience while contributing to real projects that make a difference in the community.
  • Respond to customer enquiries, offering practical guidance and building positive relationships with local residents and businesses.

What you will bring to the role;

We're looking for someone who is enthusiastic about community health and ready to build their skills in Environmental Health.

Essential requirements:

  • Background or studies in health science, environmental health or another related health discipline. Students currently studying an environmental health course are encouraged to apply.
  • Current driver's licence.
  • Strong customer service and communication skills — you'll enjoy engaging with the community and building positive relationships.
  • Ability to plan, organise and manage your own workload effectively.
  • Team player with a collaborative approach and commitment to workplace safety.

Desirable skills but not essential:

  • Understanding of environmental health practices such as wastewater management, food safety, or public health.
  • Knowledge of relevant legislation (Food Act, Public Health and Wellbeing Act, Environment Protection Act, Tobacco Act) or the willingness to learn.
  • Computer literacy (Word, Excel, PowerPoint) and ability to use electronic health systems.
  • Basic analytical and investigative skills to support inspections and compliance activities.

Why should you join us?

Be a part of a passionate, collaborative and driven team who truly care about what we do, how we do it and strive to make positive impacts within the community we serve. When working with us, you will feel supported through several different initiatives that focus on health and wellbeing, work-life balance and professional development.
